The most common remark from parents following a wonderful school concert is, “I wish my parents would have encouraged me to play an instrument and stick with it.” Whatever the reason, playing an instrument can bring joy and fulfillment like no other activity. Even standardized test scores such as the SAT are higher among musicians. Robert Melillo has worked with a composer to develop a line of music that specifically addresses strengthening each hemisphere. Other studies have also shown that learning to play an instrument enhances a student's academic performance in math, language arts, foreign language and other academic areas. Classical music and minor tones for the right side, upbeat and major tones for the left side. More recent studies show that the Mozart Effect, as it is known, has very little to do with listening to Mozart and more to do with listening to music that activates a certain portion of the brain. A considerable amount of research suggests that listening to music may improve cognitive skills. In addition to the obvious benefits of playing a music instrument, there are a number of scientifically proven and surprising academic benefits to learning music.

In all cases, performing music in front of a live audience is an exhilarating experience. For the select few that choose to pursue music as a career, it is exhilarating to be part of Symphony Orchestras, String Quartets and Bands and perform in front of large audiences in Opera Houses with rich musical history. As adults, most students choose to join bands and create music. Children that learn music at a very young age continue to participate in middle school orchestras and bands. There is nothing like the joy of performing music for your grandparents, parents, and other family and friends. Once you learn an instrument, that skill stays with you the rest of your life. Having the skill to perform a music instrument has been one of the most cherished accomplishments throughout history. The creative work of musicians can play a prominent role in challenging inequities in society.There are so many wonderful reasons to learn music and art.Everyone deserves equal access to a full, vibrant creative life, which is essential to a healthy and democratic society.Acknowledging and challenging our inequities and working in partnership is how we will make change happen.Cultural equity-which embodies values, practices, and policies that ensure all people have access to, and are represented in, the arts-is critical to the sustained engagement of music in society.
